Kudos to the Asbury Park Press Editorial Board (did I really just say that?) for their terrific editorial today.
Governor Corzine is apparently flirting with the idea of giving driver's licenses and lower college tuition to illegal immigrants.
62% of New Jerseyans think he's wrong (I long to live in a state where 100% of the people would think that he's wrong).
The Asbury Park Press calls shenanigans on the whole idea. Good for them.
When I turned 17 an uncle took me and my freshly minted driver's license aside and said, "Do you see that? It's not just a license to drive. It's a license to make money. You can be a truck driver, a delivery man, or just get yourself to and from a better job."
He was right. A driver's license is a competitive advantage. So too obviously is a college education.
The Asbury Park Press is exactly right that if we extend these competitive advantages to illegal aliens, we will attract many more of them. It just isn't fair to the legal immigrants (I welcome them with open arms) who followed the sometimes arduous rules to get here.
