Comments

you

YOU ARE THE MOST MISINFORMED AND IGNORANT MORON I HAVE SEEN ON THE INTERNET YET.

10. As opposed to those helped set up by the U.S. ? Like the Taliban , or Saddam Hussain's Iraq? How about a theocratic Iran?

9. This doesn't make sense.

8. Maria Sharapova is from Russia which is not communist and has not been, and she lived in the US most of her life and she was a pro athlete before the manly swimmer. You must have time in reverse.

7. The U.S. is responsible for the extermination of over 80 million American Indians so look inside first.

6. Again.. you need lessons on using a calendar. It's only been about 10 years.

5. This is pulled completely out of your va6ina. There is not a single liberal advocating for a one party government.

4. Because they report facts? You hate reality, I know.. it's hard.

3. You mean that the current method of deciding who gets coverage for what being decided by CEOs in for-profit corporations responsible only to their shareholders is NOT like a death panel HOW EXACTLY?

2. What does atheism have to do with this? Most democratic nations outside of the US are secular and have lower crime rates, hihger per capita GDP and human development index, while countries dominated by religion are largely full of ignorant and poor people.. like the US is becoming.

1. This one we can agree on. Thanks to Bush, all the money spend on the war in Iraq was taken as emergency loans outside of the regular government budget. Now over 45% of our debt is owed to China. I thought he was supposed to be conservative but 3 Trillion spent (in debt) on a war he himself has now admitted was based on a lie is conservative how? At least Dick got his share through Haliburton.

Larry Miller

Hey, You:
There were only 800 thousand Indians in America when the White man came.
Communist/Liberals do want a 1 party Gov.

Tyrunn

Wow, this is an awesome site!

It proves that America is the crazy fruit loop country the rest of the world thnks it is!

Thanks for re-inforcing the negative stereotype of America during it's waining years.

Look towards the UK to see where you'll be in less than 20 years, Empires don't last forever and the East is rising.

Jim

Good post, Tommy. If you defend communism (comment #1) you are simply a fool.

erin

China is much more than just America's landlord. For a number or reasons, America is now China's prison bitch.

Eric P

I was going to say a "tool", Jim, but tool or fool, you are just dumb if you defend communism. Hey You, do you know why we conservatives think you liberals are stupid? We actually listen to everything you say.

Tommy was having fun with a 'Letterman' Top Ten list about the recent decision to honor the anniversary of the communist revolution of China. If you've ever watched Letterman, and I don't blame you if you don't, you know that over half the list is just poorly constructed jokes and only 2 or 3 of them are actually funny.

Why are we honoring the communist revolution? What good did it do us? What good did it do China? What good did Communism do Russia back in the old days of the Soviet Union? Communism is just bad for people, bad for the people in the country and bad for their neighbors. The only reason China is a viable superpower today is because of two factors: one, the leaders of China realized that they needed a market-style economy to continue their regime. two, they have a culture that submitted to authoritarian rule for thousands of years. (What's the real difference between an emperor and the communist party to the man on the street? It's just someone else telling you what to do.) The leaders of China, by playing to their strengths and becoming a manufacturing juggernaut, have succeeded where the USSR failed. But in order to succeed, they first had to make sure their control was absolute. And to do that, they killed 30 million people of their own people, many of whom were teachers and lawyers and other educated people. Kill all the troublemakers.

Are you actually comparing America to that? Yes, there are certain parts of American history where we acted poorly, and maybe not with the best of intentions. (despite the revisionist history, sometimes the Native Americans attacked us first)But we also managed to form a superpower out of refugees and castaways. And we did it with Capitalism. We did it with Freedom. We did it with basic human rights. We worked together and turned the tide in not one, but two World Wars. We helped stop Communist expansion through Europe. Maybe YOU don't remember, but czechoslavia and ukraine and poland and east germany didn't choose to be communist. They were forcibly taken over by the USSR. And they weren't happier or better off for it. And neither are the Chinese. If a democracy had formed in China instead of communism, they would be far more prosperous and happy than they are now.

You

Larry Miller you are a moron. 800 THOUSAND? Please give me this source. There 80 million in NORTH America alone, this not counting the whole civilizations in central and South America that the Spanish destroyed before the US even existed.

And Eric P... Turned the tide in world wars? You really have a one sided view of the world. Please get your facts from a history book and not Saving Private Ryan. By the time US soldiers even entered into Europe in WW II 80% of the German army was destroyed by the Russians and on the defensive. All historians (even American ones) agree that D-Day and the involvement of the US did not change the outcome of the war in any significant way.

On top of that, US military only made up about 2% of TOTAL ALLIED forces in WW II... in BOTH THEATRES - Europa AND Pacific. To compare - YUGOSLAVIA had 3% of total allied forces. You really need to read things like the encyclopedia or history books and not just watch history channel.

Jim

Again, You, see my comment above. Communism has killed 100 million of it's own citizens in the last 100 years, so you're either a fool or very sinister if you defend it. There's just no other way around it.

As for your American Indian argument, that's just a really poor comparison. Even if we accept your 80 million number (though a quick google search suggests 20 million would be a generous estimate), the American government wasn't the cause for those population losses. There wasn't a systematic genocide, mass execution of political enemies, work camps, gulags, or human experimentation like we see universally in communist dictatorships (you would need those things for it to be a comparison..).

Disease was the biggest killer. Huge populations were wiped out, sometimes 90% of whole regions. So sure, you can blame that on the evil white man for bringing the disease, but it's not like you can really pin intent on that.

There were war casualties, though conflicts then involved much lesser numbers that you see in mondern war. No doubt you'll object that it was the settlers fault for coming and stealing all the Native American's lands - sure, that's fine. That was the cause for these wars and loss of life. But it's not like the majority of the Indian tribes were passive, peace-loving hippies. They were great warriors. They enjoyed constant war before the colonists arrived. Lots of them died in war, with or without the colonists.

Then there was government action, like the trail of tears, and other forced actions, reservations, etc. I won't argue fault here, it's a pretty ugly part of history. But since we're down to the smallest part of the population decline, and it's the first similarity to communist style government, and one that we both distain, I'm utterly confused as to why you think that this was a great comparison in the first place, and why you feel it necessary to rally to the defense of the People's Republic of China?

If you like communism so much that you think the benefits outweigh the costs, just say so. That's fine. Argue those benefits to me and convince me by the greatness of the system. But don't try to make up an argument comparing the U.S. government to China or the Soviet Union, because there isn't an argument. Not until the U.S. systematically slaughters 10s of millions of its own people for religous or political dissent, will it get to enter the conversation of the hallowed ground of great communist leaders held for Lenin, Stalin, Khrushchev, Mao, Pol Pot.

Edmund Wilson

Tommy.

You are such a wit. What use of irony. A veritable Johnathan Swift.

I picture you toiling away in your little basement or garret in Long Branch or whereever while lesser comics like Limbaugh and Beck make the big bucks. It's a crying shame, but that's the capitalist system.

As far as athiest chicks being sexy, forget that -- that SE Cupp, bet you'd like to slip her the old patriotic cannoli, huh?

Tommy De Seno

Edmund -

SE Cupp IS an atheist. So see, I told you atheist girls are sexy.

Edmund Wilson

Mr. De Seno, or Tom, as I call you,

By not printing my comment it appears you got last word which isn't fair. All 23 of your readers think you shut me up but you did it by censorship which, as one of Sarah Palin's REAL Americans, you know is an affront to free speech.
