I don’t make jokes.
I just watch the government and report the facts. Will Rogers
U.S. Northern Command spokesman Michael Kucharek has issued a statement confirming that two Russian nuclear submarines have been spotted along the east coast of the United States.
According to the American school of liberal thought espoused by Obama during his campaign and popularized by SNL nymph Tina Fey, having Russians close to America is no cause for concern. It’s funny, even.
However, if you are a rational person, the proximity of Russian weapons to America is cause for concern. Liberals at one time understood that. See as an example President Kennedy’s response to the Cuban Missile Crisis. Of course, the tax-cutting JFK was no liberal by today’s standards.
Sarah Palin, who ran for Vice President with exactly the same amount of foreign policy experience as Presidents Reagan and Clinton had when they ran for President, never actually said, “I can see Russia from my house.” Tina Fey’s funny line overshadowed Palin’s point: That Russia is still a military threat, and Alaska’s governor, no matter who he or she may be, has a burden of diligence toward Russia that no other state Governor shares.
Palin was right about that. If there were ever a slow military buildup by Russians near Alaska, there would be a response by the national military under the command of the President. However, were there ever a sneak attack, America’s first line of defense would be the National Guard under the command of the Alaskan Governor. That’s a foreign policy burden the other 49 Governors don’t share.
It’s also no laughing matter. The shortest distance between Russia and Alaska across the Bering Strait is 2.4 miles. That means Russia is closer to Alaska than Manhattan is to Staten Island.
The lower 48 (49?) have never really given our Alaskan brethren their due for their position near Russia and their diligence for keeping an eye on the Russians while the rest of us sleep. That indifference was on full display as Obama did nothing to defend our Guardsman and our fellow Americans against the onslaught of Fey and the liberal media’s schoolboy teasing.
What is really funny though is this: Since becoming President, Obama has not asked for a disbanding of the Alaska Air National Guard. In fact, he hasn’t even supported ordering them to stand down from their constant 24-hour alert status. Seems a terrible waste of money since the Russian threat is just a liberal punch line.
This reminds me of President Bush protecting America as a pilot with the Texas Air National Guard for 51/2 years. That too was related as a joke by the left. I haven’t seen President Obama disband that group either, since, you know, according to liberals flying for the TANG has nothing to do with protecting America.
East Coast liberals are finally getting a taste of what Alaskans live with daily – Russian weaponry in their backyard. I guess its no longer funny when it happens to liberals.
So – Tina Fey – whatcha want to do about those Russian subs? (wink).

Blow things out of proportion much?
Tina Fey and other comedians were not making fun of Alaskans. They were (and are) making fun of a transplanted Alaskan, Sarah Palin. And rightly so.
Palin is an intellectual lightweight with a mean streak. A vindictive Barbie doll who can look you in the eye and lie without blinking.
That, my friend, is a very dangerous person.
As for the Russian subs off the East coast, we have no idea what our military is doing and how prepared they are to deal with whatever might come. And I'd rather have it that way.
You know, there are military bases in Alaska other than the National Guard: three Army bases, three Air Force bases, a handful of Coast Guard installations. In all, about 19,000 regular troops in addition to the 5,600 or so National Guard troops.
So your statement that the NG would be the first line of defense in a sneak attack isn't exactly accurate.
And honestly, with all the satellites floating around and who knows what other intelligence gathering methods we have, do you really think Russia even could launch a sneak attack on us?

Bill do a Google search on how many Russian bogeys we've had to "escort" away from Alaska.
Yes, the Russians do present a "sneak attack" problem.
Sorry you didn't get Sarah's point about the problems Russian proximity causes for the state of Alaska.
Fortunately we Republicans do get it, which is why we have a Guard on 24 hour alert.
Sleep tight, liberal. We'll protect you.

Tommy, what branch of the military did you serve in?
Posted by: Jim | Wednesday, 05 August 2009 at 03:52 PM
Palin said, in response to being asked about her foreign policy experience, "I can see Russia from my house."
Not Russians.
Not submarines.
Just, Russia.
I guess that makes me Secretary of Housing and Urban Development because I own a house and live in a city.
You guys need to go back to the set of "Red Dawn". That movie where a group of high school students from Nebraska fends off the entire Soviet army.
Fiction is a genre, not reality.
If this is the intellectual motor of the right, I doubt I will see a Republican president for the rest of my lifetime. No complaints here.

Are you serious? Do you really think Russia is planning a "sneak attack" on the USA, Alaska in particular? Since you are so fond of history, perhaps we should reintroduce air raid drills at schools where children get under their desks to protect themselves from the big bomb? And we can build new bomb shelters. Those things were really useful. We can stock up on can goods, too. I think the local Shoprite supermarket is having their can-can sale again.
And you are right, she never said that she could see Russia from her house. This is what she said, "They're our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska."

Sleep tight, liberals. Armchair General Tommy DeSeno is on the job. He's never spent a day in the military, mind you. He's never done so much as one push-up in defense of our nation, but he'll protect you.
Tommy, if you really cared about America's national defense; if you really cared about the threat that the Russians pose(d) to our country, you would have joined the military yourself when you were a younger man. But you didn't join. Don't you dare suggest for one minute, you pathetic wannabe, that you know defend a nation, or that liberals aren't interested in protecting America.

If my history serves me correctly, "liberals" gained our freedom. Conservatives back then were okay with the status quo, maintaining allegiance to British rule.
Take it easy on them everyone. Just like back then, us "liberals" didn't shoot our wounded brothers (figuratively speaking), we should refrain from doing it today as well.
Although misinformed and delusional, they are our compatriots and deserve our support.

Tommy, I am a Republican that is also the proud grandson of a liberal hero. Like many in his generation, my grandfather, now deceased, was shaped by the times in which he lived. I don't think my grandfather ever voted for a candidate that wasn't a Democrat.
During the Second World War, Gramps was a Marine. Take me at my word when I tell you that this humble man was a hero that literally bled for our freedom. Please don't spit on my grandfather's memory. Please don't suggest that only one political party cares about our nation's security. Please give some thought to the words that you write.

Jim McMahon don't compare the Democrat your grandfather was, that my mother was, that Ronald Reagan was, that Jack Kennedy was, to the Democrats of today.
The philosophy of political parties often changes. Both parties are unrecognizable compared to where they started. The Republicans were started by 3 civil rights groups, and were dedicated to a loose construction of the constitution. The Democrats were started by men who believed in states' rights and a strict construction of the constitution. That's the opposite of their views today.
The Democrats are today where they never were before.
Anyone who thinks that Alaska has no heightened reason for concern about the proximity of Russian weapons (or fakes believing that to score political points against Palin during an election), and in fact makes a joke of our Guardsman, yet winces when Russian weapons are near New York or Miami is certainly not genuinely concerned about America's security.
Obama tells Europe America is arrogant and apologizes for her actions, when your Grandfather's military asked for nothing more in Europe after liberating it twice than room to bury dead American soldiers. Obama's weakness in front of the world and the Democrats who support him shows a lack of care for protecting our country. I don't recall any Democrat before Obama supporting an apology tour of Europe, and I doubt your grandfather or my mother would support it as Democrats.
It's the Democrat party that dishonors the Democrat your grandfather and my mother were, not me.

Tommy,
What a loyal foot soldier you are of Fox News propaganda.
I have yet to see an original thought on your blog.
But here's an original thought, posited by Hermann Goering, Hitler's eventual successor and Commander of Nazi Germany's Air Force:
“Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”

Tommy, you ought to be ashamed of yourself to suggest that you will/can protect anyone.

I don't know why my last name didn't come up next to my post. That said, my name is Jim McMahon and I wrote the post above (5:44 PM, 06 August 2009).

I wonder if any of you commentators have ever been to Alaska much less live there. As a foreign born, 21 year Alaskan I have a slightly different opinion of Alaska's importance as a defensive State that most of you southerners. I live less than 1 mile from the Air National Guard base and about 8 miles from Elmendorf AFB. Kodiak Island, Alaska has the Nations largest Coast Guard Installation, covering about 23,000 acres.
Like Tommy said, our Alaskan stationed military services are on 24 hour alert. With our countries only a few miles apart, it is no great novelty to see Russian Submarines and ships (along with ships from Japan and other nations) from the coast of Alaska. I doubt the residents of any other States are familiar with watching F-16's of F-22's coming and going as they peacefully redirect foreign planes out of American Airspace.
If "Red Dawn" was to actually happen it is not far fetched to think that it might begin here (where you can row to the other country in a dingy). For every Alaskan Resident the responsibility as the first line of defense is more than some Republican Fanaticism. The ratio of guns to gun owners is about 3:1 in Alaska. For those of you who think I'm exaggerating in all of this, I invite you to visit our great state and find out for yourself!

Jim or Jim McMahon writes...
"Thanks, Gofftedo(sic), for the post above. You write very well."
...and the post above by Goffredo was just a quote of Nazi General Hermann Goering, so Goffredo didn't really write anything at all, he only copied someone else.
Jim or Jim McMahon, you reveal a lot about yourself by the people you admire. I do not admire you nor your intellectual ability.

"Sleep tight, liberal. We'll protect you."
I think we found a new catch-phrase for Armchair General Tommy.
