I guess I won't be seeing Jeff Cantor at the Monmouth County Republican Lincoln Day Dinner, which is where I recall first meeting him.
Over at MoreMonmouthMusings Art Gallagher is reporting on the former Monmouth County Republican Freeholder Candidate putting on the Black Hat and becoming a Democrat.
The legacy of former County Chair Adam Puharic just got even worse.
It was bad enough that Adam declared war on Anna Little who was the previous election's high vote taker in the County, but then Adam lost the seat he chased her from. Now we have to wonder if the "screening" process Adam so enthusiastically heralded was flawed - it gave us candidate Cantor, who was harboring thoughts of going Democrat. Any screening committee worth a damn would expose a closet Democrat, not make him our candidate.
Let me first say that Cantor personally is a stand up guy. He serves in our military, and I thank him for that. He's a solid family man and has been involved in public service. He deserves my respect personally, and he has it.
That doesn't immunize him from complaints by me for making a bad political decision. Becoming a Democrat is a rather bad one.
Political parties aren't supposed to be a social club, nor a platform for personal growth (Art reports the Cantor switch had something to do with Cantor's relationship with Marlboro's Democrat Mayor).
Political parties involve commitment to certain ideas - ideas that revolve around protecting people's rights so they can improve their own lives without the burden of trespasses by government or others. It's serious business. You have to really care for and support your party's ideas.
Is Jeff Cantor really going to align himself with Democrat ideas? Can we expect him now to extol the virtues of sucking out babies' brains during abortions? Is he going to be a fan of Eminent Domain and take your private property? Is he going to favor New Jersey segregationist policies like Abbott School Funding? Does Jeff Cantor want to sell the Turnpike?
I certainly didn't hear him clap for those issues when he was my candidate for Freeholder. I didn't think he cared for those issues when I pulled the lever for him (or pressed the button until the light came on next to his name, actually).
You are a still a good man Jeff Cantor.
I just don't think you can go to heaven now.
You are totally wrong on where democrats stand...at least this democrat. I do not believe that we should keep throwing money to the Abbot districts. I am in favor of charter schools and vouchers. I have marched in protest against eminent domain policies and even wrote to the paper in Colts Neck about implementing a no eminent domain policy. I am also opposed to partial birth abortion. I alos support the death penalty. These issues transcend ideologies. Maybe you should pick something like how I'm for the stimulus package, or against the unjust Iraq war. Something that DOES speak to differences. Or, even better, maybe you should TALK to a democrat before you make generalized rash judgements about what we think.

Tommy I respect your opinion, but to yet again blame something else on Adam is way off the mark. I talked to Cantor when he was running there was no inkling that he was a closet dem. You are smarter than I, you had conversations with him, did you have any sense that he had democrat leanings?
I know you have a sense of humor, so before someone criticizes you about the heaven remark, I'm sure that was just tongue and cheek?
I thought the screening committee was a good idea. I'm human, so I could be wrong does that make me a bad person?
I have to agree with you though, I can't see how a person that is committed to the Republican party can switch and become a democrat. Especially in New Jersey where the democrats have ruined our state, and will now try and do the same to our country. Led by Chicago democrats.
I respect Jeff's sacrifice, and service to our country.
The day the Republican party takes the same stands on social, as well as fiscal issues as the dems do...is when I leave, or rather the party leaves me.
Instead of continuing to look for a scapegoat within our own party, and playing the blame game, let's pull together and work toward a common goal...winning!
